LJ 3: Social Media Metrics and Analytics
“Social media sites offer unique opportunities to measure human nature and communication behavior. (Lipschultz, 2017, p. 156)”
The quote above, is something that was mentioned in our readings this week. I found this really interesting because it reminds me of something that I see happening often. Using social media, companies can gather information on how customers are buying their products. Companies can begin to advertise and update their websites to make it easier for customers to navigate through them. A good example of this is the evolution of shopping. In the beginning, shopping was something that was physical. You would go out of your house, walk through the aisles of the store and buy things that you may or may not need. Then, people started shopping online, so companies made their websites easier to navigate through. They also started creating mobile apps so that you can buy the things you need on the go without actually going to the store or even opening up a stores website. Stores like Walmart, Target, and CVS Pharmacy, all have mobile apps that make it a breeze to shop. Paying is also pretty simple with these apps, as there are now functions that allow you to pay through it.
I noticed how many apps that are popular and making lots of money are apps that are primarily used on a person’s phone. This was really interesting to me, and to be honest it made a lot of sense. A person’s mobile phone is something that they will surely have on hand most hours of the day. So naturally, many people would want to use their phones more than their computers or laptops. Using your phone gives you really quick access to things with the tap of a button. That is why apps like TikTok, Instagram, or snapchat are extremely popular, since they are primarily used on phones. The textbook also mentioned that phones are being made with higher camera quality for apps like Instagram. And editing videos are so easy on TikTok since everything is now available on a person’s phone.
One reason I found this particularly interesting is that I’ve noticed myself being hooked to my phone. It is really easy access, and it is always next to me, which is why many people (including myself) tend to always be on their phones

Hi Sidra
ReplyDeleteI think your mention of shopping is really interesting considering how google is using our data to push out products that they think we will enjoy. This takes the stress out of going to the mall and physically look for pieces you might enjoy. Algorithms, using our data, know what we want to buy before we even have the thought. Great post!
